Message From Francis to visitors not connected to the leather industry.
There are many cultures & religions based in the Far East, the variety of fish caught & eaten is far different to that in the Northern Hemisphere. Likewise the selection of creatures Farmed for their meat is very different. The Tanners (like MPL), the Leather Industry & Leather Craftsmen use these skins which would otherwise be destroyed as waste. Please remember if we did not make use of them, NOT ONE SINGLE fish or creature would be saved. Without a World Wide change in the feeding habits of humans.

This Tannery main source of skin is 'Shagreen' Skins (Stingray Skins) The Leather Connection is the Forwarding Agent for MPL. These are extremely hard wearing skins as well as producing highly fashionable leathergoods which at present are only available to the high end market. The skins are available in a range of colours & we can supply colour charts. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity supplies of these skins are limited. A range of other exotic skins are also available, select from: Snake, Shark, Ostrich & many more. All these skins are of exceptional quality.  Contact us for further information & at all times quote Ref: FB-M. TLC.

Note. These skins are a by-product of the local fishing industry as Stingray is a food fish in that area. If it could not be used it would be discarded as waste. All the other skins form part of the food chain & the skins are a by-product. No rare or endangered species are involved. This is not always the case with supplies from elsewhere. See a colour chart for 'Shagreen below mail@mplthailand.com To read more about the origin of the term "Shagreen" Click Here.

Stingray (Shagreen) Art Deco Colour Range.

The term Shagreen was coined sometime in the Victorian era & it referred to the skins of Shark which had been Tanned in a shade of green which resembled the colour of Verdigris that gave it a pale Antique appearance This was the only colour used hence the name Shagreen Sha for Shark & green for it's Colour. Although the skins were thin the surface was extremely hard wearing which accounts for the many fine examples of Craftsmanship that have survived. (A collection of them can be viewed at The Victoria & Albert Museum London).

Moving on to modern times Stingray (a sub-species of Shark). is now marketed as Shagreen & with the modern tanning techniques perfected by MPL a wide variety of colours are available to the present day Designers. Stingray has long been caught by Fishermen in the Far East & it forms a staple diet of that region however it's use as a skin has only become popular since the last World War. Until then it was discarded with the exception of the Fishermen themselves using it as a free substitute for Sandpaper when building their boats, (yes it really is that hard).

For the Designer this really is the perfect material as the Jewel or Eye as the Pearl like marking in the center of the back is called provides scope for strategic placement on Leathergoods, Footwear, Furniture, Interior Design, etc. For the discerning owner of Designer Goods made from these fabulous Skins the air of quiet sophistication & wealth experienced with ownership puts one on a par with the rich & famous like Royalty & Film Stars.

But the best part of it is you don't have to feel guilty as the use of Stingray in manufacture is not like the use of Fur taken from an animal which need not have been killed. these exotic & beautiful skins are virtually the waste product of the food chain in the region they are caught & until the Tanneries were established they were discarded, burnt or buried. & if for any reason we ceased to use them That's what would happen again. You just cant stop populations eating meat in one form or another & in some cultures it is ingrained as part of their religion.
